Arch. PhD Federica Fernandez is the new Cluster Manager at Ecodomus


Ecodomus has appointed as its new Cluster Manager Arch. PhD Federica Fernandez.

The appointment of Dr Fernandez is crucial in the broader framework of actions that will reinvigorate the Consortium activities, and the District actions outlined in the District Development Pact of Ecodomus, which are recognized by Decree no. 1289/2020 of the Sicily Regional Department for Productive Activities (Assessorato delle Attività Produttive).

The new Cluster Manager will be responsible, in particular, to identify, promote and develop all the projecting activities, at national, European and international level, with specific regard to the topics of R&D in sustainable construction: among others, eco-innovation of product and process, integration of the principles of the circular economy in construction, industrial symbiosis. More in general, she will have the broader task of identifying and carrying out all the actions necessary for the growth and development of the Cluster.

She currently also hold the position of Deputy Director at I.E.ME.S.T. Euro-Mediterranean Institute for Science and Technology and Director of the Department Nanotechnologies and Innovative Materials, and of Innovation Expert and Expert Evaluator EASME for the European Commission, External Evaluator POR of the Sicily Regional Department for Productive Activities (Assessorato delle Attività Produttive), and Scientific Expert for MIUR REPRISE (Competitive industrial research and social development).

Graduated with honors in Architecture at the University of Palermo, PhD in “Recovery and Use of Ancient Contexts”, she obtained various Masters and specializations in the field of materials and trained in 2004 on nanotechnologies and nanomaterials at NASA in San Francisco (USA).

Involved in more than 30 national and international projects in the field of innovative materials for sustainable building construction (green building) and cultural heritage preservation. She has written several books and published more than 70 articles in books, journals and conference proceedings.

She has worked with numerous national and international university research groups, has been a lecturer in “Pathologies and degradation of materials”, “Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials”, from 2008 to 2016 she was Technical Manager of the II level University Master in “Expert Researcher in Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials for Cultural Heritage ” at the University of Palermo.

She presented the results of her research activities in numerous international events as invited speaker, such as the World Conference on Advanced Materials (Chonqing, China) and the NNI International Conference on Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials (Tessaloniki, Greece) and she has been invited to hold lectures and didactic seminars in various foreign universities.
